Ingredients
For the Crescent Rolls:
- 1 (8-ounce) package of Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls (8 rolls)
For the Filling:
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
For the Glaze:
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven
Before starting, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
2. Prepare the Dough
Unroll the crescent roll dough on a clean surface. If it is perforated into triangles, press the seams together to create a single sheet. This will make it easier to spread the filling evenly.
3. Make the Filling
In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well combined. The mixture should be smooth and spreadable.
4. Spread the Filling
Using a spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the cinnamon-sugar filling evenly over the dough. Make sure to reach all edges for a consistent flavor throughout.
5. Shape the Twists
Carefully fold the dough in half lengthwise, pressing lightly to seal. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the dough into strips, about one inch wide. Take each strip and twist it gently a few times to create the signature spiral shape.
6. Bake
Place the twisted dough strips onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart to allow for expansion. Bake in the preheated oven for 9 to 12 minutes or until golden brown and flaky.
7. Prepare the Glaze
While the twists are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract (if using) in a small bowl. Adjust the milk quantity to achieve the desired consistency—thicker for a more pronounced drizzle or thinner for a light glaze.
8. Finish and Serve
Once the twists are golden brown, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Drizzle the prepared glaze over the warm twists and serve immediately.
Notes
- Handling the Dough: If the dough becomes too soft or sticky, place it in the refrigerator for a few minutes before working with it. Chilled dough is easier to shape and twist.
- Even Baking: Make sure to arrange the twists with some space between them on the baking sheet. This prevents them from sticking together and ensures even browning.
- Checking for Doneness: The twists should be golden brown on the outside and slightly crisp at the edges. If unsure, tap one lightly—if it sounds hollow and feels firm, it is ready.
- Preventing Over-Browning: If the twists are browning too quickly, loosely cover them with foil and continue baking until done.
- Making Ahead: The dough can be prepared and twisted in advance, then refrigerated for a few hours before baking. This is helpful when planning for a breakfast treat or a special occasion.
