Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 (26-ounce) bag frozen fries (shoestring not recommended)
- 1–2 teaspoons olive oil
- ⅔ pound 85% lean ground beef
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup shredded lettuce
- ¼ cup diced tomato
- ¼ cup chopped pickles
- ¼ cup chopped red onion
For the Cheese Sauce
- 5 ounces (about 2 cups) shredded cheddar cheese (freshly grated recommended)
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 teaspoon flour
- ½ cup milk
- ½ teaspoon yellow mustard
For the Special Sauce
- 4 ½ tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 ½ tablespoons ketchup
- 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ½ teaspoons honey
- ¾ teaspoon yellow mustard
- ¾ teaspoon hot sauce (or to taste)
Instructions
Step 1: Bake the Fries
- Preheat your oven according to the instructions on the bag of frozen fries.
- Spread the fries evenly on a baking sheet in a single layer. This ensures they cook evenly and get crispy.
- Bake according to package instructions, flipping halfway through if needed.
Beginner Tip: To achieve extra crispy fries, consider placing the baking sheet on the lowest oven rack. This allows the heat to circulate and crisp the bottom of the fries.
Step 2: Prepare the Ground Beef
- While the fries are baking, preheat a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add 1–2 teaspoons of olive oil to the skillet.
- Add the ground beef and break it into chunks using a spatula.
- Sprinkle the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper over the meat.
- Continue breaking the beef into smaller pieces and cook until no longer pink. This should take about 5–7 minutes.
- Once fully cooked, cover the skillet and set it aside to keep warm.
Beginner Tip: If the beef releases excess grease, carefully drain it before covering the skillet. If using leaner ground meat, such as ground chicken, add a little extra oil to prevent it from drying out.
Step 3: Make the Special Sauce
- In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, honey, mustard, and hot sauce.
- Whisk until smooth and well combined.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. If you prefer a milder sauce, reduce the hot sauce.
- Place in the refrigerator to chill while you prepare the rest of the dish.
Beginner Tip: This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. It also works as a great dip for fries or even as a burger topping.
Step 4: Prepare the Cheese Sauce
- In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the flour and whisk continuously for about one minute to cook out the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in about one-third of the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
- Gradually add the remaining milk, continuing to whisk until smooth.
- Add the mustard and mix well.
- Reduce the heat to low and start adding the shredded cheese in small handfuls, stirring after each addition until melted.
- Once the cheese sauce is smooth, remove it from heat. If needed, add a pinch of salt to taste.
Beginner Tip: If the cheese sauce thickens too much, add a splash of warm milk and stir to loosen it up.
Step 5: Assemble the Loaded Fries
- Remove the fries from the oven and transfer them to a large serving dish or individual plates.
- Drizzle the hot cheese sauce evenly over the fries.
- Sprinkle the cooked ground beef on top.
- Add the shredded lettuce, diced tomato, chopped pickles, and red onion.
- Drizzle the special sauce over everything, using as much or as little as desired.
- Serve immediately while warm.
Beginner Tip: For an extra touch, garnish with chopped fresh parsley or a sprinkle of sesame seeds to mimic a classic cheeseburger bun.
Notes
- Preventing Soggy Fries: If you’re not serving the dish immediately, keep the fries warm in the oven at a low temperature (around 200°F) until ready to assemble.
- Reheating Leftovers: While this dish is best enjoyed fresh, you can reheat leftovers in an oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes to help crisp up the fries again. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the fries soggy.
- Customizing the Special Sauce: If you love a tangy kick, add a splash of pickle juice. For a smokier flavor, a pinch of smoked paprika works wonders.
- Doubling the Recipe: This dish is great for parties. If making a larger batch, prepare the cheese and special sauce in advance to streamline the process.
